Take it away Meredith!!!!
Hi! I’m Meredith, the blogger behind ThePaletteMuse.com. I’m an artist by training, a part-time interior decorator/stylist, and a full-time wife and mom. I have a wonderfully supportive (in spite of the occasional eye-roll) husband, and two fast-growing little girls, ages 9 and 6. I love taking care of my family and I thrive on doing creative projects and sharing them on the blog. The challenge is finding the right times to do both!
The Palette Muse started as a way for me to share art, color, and design ideas further afield than just my immediate clients, but has grown into a creative outlet that I look forward to every day. I’d love for it to eventually grow into a secondary source of income, so that I can justify the costs of the materials for my never-ending stream of new projects.
What is your blogging niche? Do you think it is important for bloggers to keep to one or two topics, or do you think it is okay for one person to cover multiple categories on one blog? Why?
My niche is pretty broad, which has often prompted me to ask myself the question of whether it’s necessary to specialize, or if it’s OK to cover several categories on one blog. My tagline is “Art, Design, Color, and Thoughts on Life.” Around 99% of the things I deal with in a normal week will fall into one of those categories, so I have a lot of possibilities when it comes time to pick a topic to write about. I think creative personalities inherently struggle with narrowing down their interests, and for now, I’ve decided that in order for the blog to honestly reflect my personality, it needs to be almost as scattered as I am.
I try to weed out any topics that aren’t somehow creative in nature, and stick to those that are fun, beautiful, or in any other way inspiring. Stories about motherhood and family life, as well as my faith, inevitably sneak in as well. I hope it all works together to be a fun and inspiring place to visit and learn. I often think of the verse in Philippians that says “Whatever is true…noble…lovely…Think on these things.” I want to give people something good to think about as they go about their day.
Share a link to your favorite post you’ve ever written. Why is it your favorite?
I would have a hard time picking a favorite post, but I think one that best represents the feel of the blog would be my latest one about The Anatomy of a Healthy Re-upholstery Project. (My actual favorite would probably be one about my kids, but that’s probably just me being a little biased.) The re-upholstery project covers some of the things I’m passionate about: thrifty makeovers, pretty home décor, and helpful how-to’s.
Do you have any pieces of advice for other bloggers?
I’m fairly new to blogging, so I have a lot to learn, but I think the best thing I can say to other new (or old) bloggers is to not get wrapped up too much in what everyone else is doing. It’s so easy to compare yourself, and your blog, to someone who has been doing this forever and has a huge following, because those are the blogs that are easy to find. But everyone has to start somewhere. So use the talents you have and do your best, and most of all, do what YOU want to do on your blog. Learn from the best, but don’t feel pressured to be just like them. Being you is what makes you interesting to the people looking at your blog. (At least that’s what I’m hoping!)
I’m so happy to be interviewed at Blogging on the Side because they are one of my favorite resources as I’m trying to learn how to make my blog the best it can be. Thanks Ladies!
