That is a tricky question because it does look different for every one. My rules are —
1. I won’t share something that will be hurtful to some one else. (This is hard because so much of my personal story intersects with others, but I won’t share things that will paint some one else in a bad light, even if they are true, and might be helpful to some one who has experienced similar things. Hurting one to help others is not an okay trade for me).
2. I can share personal things about myself, but not any one else (without their permission)
3. I keep in mind that whatever I put online is there forever. Will I want to have shared this deep part of my heart or personal details in one year or five years from now?
4. Anytime I’m not sure I have a non-blogging friend proof read for me. She helps keep me grounded and find lines between being personal and sharing too much.
5. Make sure my post is helpful to others – I find that sharing my story can be helpful, but when I write it with an emphasis on helping my readers through something similar, I don’t always have to go quite as deep into my personal story, but can still share a moderate amount and reach those readers that I want to connect with
I am interested to hear every one else’s rules! I am sure they will be different for all of us!
