Here is how to make a full-time income blogging, with a break-down:

  • I have 2 million- 3 million page views a month on yourmodernfamily.com
  • I have been blogging for about four years.
  • This income does not include what I make on my other websites or from teaching other people how to blog, it’s strictly from my parenting site!
  • I work from home, with four kids, so my hours a day vary greatly from 1 hour to 8 hours, depending on what kind of day it is (preschool day or home day, sports practice or not, early bedtime or late bedtime).
  • My husband works from home, too, on his blog and mine, so he helps me to take care of the house, meals & kids.  We work as a team in everything we do!
  • I write a lot of books and I give a 50% affiliate fee to anyone that sells them.  This helps a lot.

Here is how I earn money:

  • I started a blog.  Yep.  That’s what I did.  You can jump right into starting a blog here (in 2 minutes).  If you want more details, you can buy our book about starting a blog here. 
  • I write books that sell a lot.  It varies.   I self-published all of my books and that allows me to keep a bigger profit.   I highly suggest everyone write a book.  Find your very best post (highest page views) and turn it into a book.  Here is a post that covers everything about writing a book.  Here are our blogging books that you can sell (you get a % of the sales) and here are my books that you can sell for a 50% affiliate fee.
    Here is a course about reaching your publishing dreams. (Paula took this course before she published her first book and LOVED it. We highly recommend it or this ebook to get you started!)
  • I swaps guest posts for book shares.  I will ask someone with more Facebook fans than me to promote my book (using their affiliate link) in exchange for guest posts on their page.
  • For my blog, I often have posts that go viral.  I write what I would want to read and then I share that post.  Most of my posts do well because people want to read it, too.  That helpful hint that you do at home?  Share it.   That wonderful parenting Ah-Ha moment?  Share it.
  • I take pictures that bring readers to my posts.  This book is perfect to learn how to take pictures of food (but I use the techniques to for all of my photos)
  • I write sponsored posts.   This means that companies reach out to me and ask me to talk about their product.  They send me the product and they pay me money to write about it.  I used to make $50/post my first few months.  Now I make $1800 or more for my posts.
  • I have ads on my website.
  • I am an affiliate of many companies, like Etsy.  I make a lot on affiliate sales.  I sell on Facebook and in my posts, by showing my favorite things. and I do a lot with Craftsy because they offer freebies for my readers.
  • I pin a lot.  I use Board Booster to pin.  It is a game-changer for me!   I spent about 4 hours one day setting Board Booster up & I never had to do it again.   Well- once a day I go in & pin my new pin for the day.
  • I send out e-mails.  Every week.  These e-mails have links to a lot of different books and products that my readers can buy.  They have links to posts that they can read.  I use Convert Kit and I love it.If you combine the women of Bloggers Tell All, they are making millions of dollars in revenue each year, with around 25-30 million page views a month.  It can be done.   They are the proof.

  • Try to include an affiliate link in every post (not sponsored posts).
  • I use my Facebook page to promote those affiliate links, too.
  • You can pin your affiliate links by doing a roundup of them & pinning from there.  Example:  20 best birthday gifts for your one-year-old   Link each one to an affiliate link & you can pin all of them.   It will bring the Pinterest readers to you & they can go to the store from there.

What I changed this month: 

This month I changed a few things.  I feel like I am working a lot, but not MORE.  I have actually cut back on my work time because the kids were home from school.  This meant that I had to cut back on Facebook (socializing), etc… to make time for my ‘work’.

1. I increased the amount that I charge for a sponsored post.  (I still charge a little less if the client is very easy to work with for a post.)    I was undercharging for my page views.

2. I started using BoardBooster for my Pinterest account and it has made a WORLD of difference.   I have multiple campaigns running and I have all of my boards looping, so I can literally pin it one time and it is being repinned all of the time, without my help!  Yay!    This cut my pinning time down by SO much!  I literally pin for maybe 5 minutes a day now.

3.  I made a list of books that I wanted to create and started working on them.
A- Paula and I published a new book about how to start a blog and it has been successful.
B- Mickey, Paula and I started working on a tax book for our BeckyandPaula.com page.
C- I was also asked to write a book for a publishing company and I have been busy working on that one.
D- We wrote a Christmas book
E- I started writing a book with Janae (Icanteachmychild.com) that we will finish in the spring. (we were both teachers)

4. If a company wrote to ask me to do a review of the product, I would instead offer a tweet for them instead (I would not have done this when I started, by now that I have a better Twitter following, I can do this).  I ended up having almost all of our kid’s Christmas gifts sent to us for free because of this.  I even bartered for tablets for my niece and nephew this way.

5. Sharing more of my own stuff on Facebook, in the evening hours.  I share most other’s people’s things all day long, but the nighttime hours are for yourmodernfamily.com

6. Asked my VA to run my share groups for me.  This was a time suck and I was forgetting about it.  Once she took over, it was such a load off of my mind.   Rule of thumb: I hire someone if I think that I can spend that hour doing something that would make me money.

7. Start adding more affiliate products & links to my top 10 posts on Google Analytics.

8. Made a spreadsheet (well- Paula made it for me b/c I am awful at making them!).  I then filled in my top 100 posts from G/A so I would know which ones to share on Facebook more regularly.   I went back & tracked the reach (after 3 days) on that same spreadsheet.

9.  I worked on my e-mail list.   I started being more consistent with once a week blog e-mails.  I made them less about “what my blog is about this week” and more about “here is one post that I thought you would like”.  I am playing around with titles.   It’s funny because when Mickey sends one out to his 500 subscribers, he gets a 50% open rate.  When I send them out to my 25,000 subscribers, I get a 22% open rate.  I am determined to figure it out & increase my rate.  (note: the average opening rate is 21%, so I am doing OK, but I want to do better… my mentality for my blog is always this.  I am doing my blog for my family and the better I do, the better for them.  My goal is to have my blog be 100% passive income in a few years, leave my time 100% open to my family, so I will work hard NOW, with many late nights and many early mornings, to make that happen THEN.)

10. I started working for other bloggers that I look up to.  I want to point this out to everyone… you will learn when you work for other bloggers (I spend a lot of time studying).   You may be paid in shares, in education, or with money, but you will learn and it will make your blog better.  You are never too old/smart/experienced, etc… to learn.♥

11. I started doing much more on my Instagram page.  I want to grow that following.  It has grown over 1,000 this month (I think… I should be keeping better track than I am!) 

Highlights this month: 

My Motrin commercial with Kelly Ripa was released.   This was so much fun & so exciting!   Our son asks me every week “When do you think we can go back to New York and do another commercial with Miss. Kelly?” 😉

Blog Travel: 

In October:  Mickey and I went to Social Media on the Sand in Turks and Caicos.

We also went to Dollywood, for free (free hotel, trip and tickets to Dollywood and a museum) – I write about bartering for trips here. 

In November:  Mickey and I went to a Type A Mastermind group in Asheville for two days (just a two hour drive for us).

In November: I went to BlogHer Food in Chicago for the day on behalf of Bounty (I love working for companies that appreciate what you do!)  I learned some great youtube ideas and had a chance to meet the people that I work with via e-mail (for Bounty) & hang out with some blogging friends.

My Goals for next month: 

1- Make more videos & get over feeling egocentric & self-centered about it! 🙂
2- Turn ALL of my books into files that can be downloaded for people to listen to (audio books).
3- Make courses from my books.

We share our blogging income reports here as inspiration for you.  Many bloggers, like myself, when I started, thought making money on a blog was “dreaming big”.  I just wanted to make enough to pay for preschool, but I have been able to make far more than that… and you can, too.  I hope that you find this report helpful.

My income this month, as with every month, is calculated BEFORE expenses (expenses are several thousands of dollars!)  This is also my PENDING income (what I am owed for work done in July).

How many hours do I work a day?

I would say that some days I work four hours on YMF, but other days I don’t work at all.  It really is a toss-up.  I try to work from 8:00 pm- 1:00 am (while the kids are sleeping, taking 1-2 hours off to watch TV with Mickey).   
This is our job – we blog to earn a living. 

I try not to work on anything “important” during the day (sponsored posts or even regular posts) because the kids will probably be around and I don’t want to be distracted when they are talking to me.

PV: My Page views were lower this month (about a million less than they were a few months back), but you can see that my income went up, again.   This to say that it doesn’t matter (too much) what your PVs are… it is what you are doing with your blog that really makes a difference – are you adding affiliate links into your posts?  Are you making products?   Are you using your social media to sell?  You can do these things & increase your earnings.

First month- blogging- I made about $5 and a free pizza!
A few years later… I was earning enough that my husband was able to quit his job and we both work from home, growing our online business.

What I want to do BETTER next month:

  1. My goal for months now has been to get ALL of my ebooks onto paperback via Createspace – STILL WORKING ON THIS!  I want to do this.  It is just time consuming.
  2. I am working on a project with a few bloggers where we will give 100% of the proceeds to charity – it is called THE MOM QUILT.  We are getting ready to publish it!
  3. Working on an E-Course.
  4. Start making more YouTube Videos.   Mickey made a few and figured out the editing, etc… so now we just need to do more.   I am still working on this one.
    We are going to do this…   REALLY!
  5. Organize my Pinterest page more
  6. Turn BeckyMansfield.com into a real thing & not just a page that redirects to YMF (like it has been doing for 3 years now)

~~~ Exciting things on the rise~~~

  • I will be speaking at another conference in September.   I was also invited to three blogging conferences as a VIP member, which is exciting.  I haven’t quite decided which ones we are going to go to just yet, but we are weighing each option (we don’t want to be gone from the kids very much).
  • I have a VERY exciting commercial shoot with an amazing celebrity coming up, too, but more details on that as they unfold in the media!
  • I am going to finally be turning my BeckyMansfield.com into a real page and not just one that redirects to YourModernFamily (as it has done for the past 3 years! haha!)  Mickey and I want to start sharing our daily life happenings over there (along with videos, etc…)

We share our income reports here as inspiration for you.  Many bloggers, like myself when I started, thought that a lofty goal like $1,000 was out of reach, so we want to show you just how much you can make.  The sky is the limit…

This is BEFORE expenses (expenses are several thousands of dollars!)  This is also my PENDING income, not what I have received this month.   Also, this is only from  YourModernFamily.com, not including income from this website (not including our book sales from Blogging On The Side: Where passion meets profit.)

It is also not including the income from my husband’s blog, Your Modern Dad (although I should have him post one… hmm… he made over $1500 by his second month!  He is literally just following the advice given on our 30 days series and on our blog)   I also have two other friends that have also started blogging (keepinglifesane.com and thecolemines.com, following this advice and they are both doing amazing, as well!  I plan on using those three blogs for case studies on how our advice works… but more on that later.)

How many hours do I work a day?  
At least three- four on YMF.  Another hour is spent on this site.
This is our job – we blog to earn a living. 
I try to work from 8:00 until midnight or 1… or 2 am.  My husband and I work together.   Now, about 3 nights a week, we quit early (around 9:00) to watch a movie or play a game – on those nights, I will sometimes wake up early and work for an hour before the kids wake up or work during rest time.  I will do some social media during the day, but that’s about it.   That way I can put my phone down whenever I need to, because it doesn’t “have to get done right now” and I leave the “uninterrupted times” for when the kids are in bed.

PV: My Page views were much lower this month (about a million less than the past couple of months), but you can see that my income went way up.   This to say that it doesn’t matter (too much) what your PVs are… it is what you are doing with your blog. 


BIG NEWS THIS MONTH:
BLOGGER2BUSINESS continues to grow!  The plans that we have for this site are amazing!  I can’t wait for you to see more.  We are planning some huge things that will help you to grow your blog, grow your following, increase your page views and increase your income.

New things that I did this month:

1- Started selling a second product.
2-Sharing my posts to some Facebook pages
3- Put specific ads on my page.
4- Wrote a new book with Paula & Holly.
5- I took an Instagram class to help me with my Instagram page.  The biggest thing that I learned is to be CONSISTENT.  Do you post bright images?  Make them all bright.  etc…
6- Wrote another book with Paula, Holly, Jamie Harrington & Rachel Norman.

 

 

 

What I want to do BETTER next month:

1. My goal for months now has been to get ALL of my ebooks onto paperback via Createspace – STILL WORKING ON THIS!  I want to do this.  It is just time consuming.

2. I am working on a project with a few bloggers where we will give 100% of the proceeds to charity.   I want to get this started this month.

3. Finish my book with two blogging friends, where we will donate many, many books.

4. Start making more YouTube Videos.   Mickey made a few and figured out the editing, etc… so now we just need to do more.

5. Organize my Facebook page to work for me.  I need to set up a schedule.  Example:
7:00 am- affiliate link amazon.
8:00 am- share from my wall.
9:00 am – share one of my own posts.
etc…

3- Build up the kid’s college savings account (four kids!)
4- Give more money to charities (my two upcoming projects will be helping me with this goal)

My dream goal that I don’t know if I’ll ever actually have:
Buy a small beach house on the ocean at Hilton Head Island – more to remember my grandparents and the memories that HHI holds (they lived there for over 20 years and we always vacationed at their home) than for the actual beach and ocean (because… ‘wait for it’…
I don’t go in the ocean AT ALL.
Fish in the water + Becky in the water at the same time = never going to happen.)

BIG NEWS THIS MONTH:
My husband quit his job as a financial manager!  He will be working from home with me, full time.  He will be doing our bookkeeping, finances and he will be building his own blog (with my help) – yourmoderndad.com   (I love it already, if I do say so myself!)
*This was my ultimate goal.   I didn’t think this would happen, but I could not be more excited.  We have been together since we were 14 years old, so we have always dreamed of the day when we could spend our days together and now it will happen.  We have so many plans!

New things that I did this month:

1- Putting a real “effort” into selling Young Living Oils (my goal was to get two people signed up each month & its paying off- literally).
2- Started to share my posts to some Facebook pages again (I had stopped that for a while).
3- Went back & re-vamped old posts (new image, better flow, more SEO friendly)
4- Started sharing affiliate links once a day on my Facebook Page.
5- Get more “personal” by starting my Instagram page and being very active on it.  I don’t do too many personal posts on my blog, so this is a little sneak-peek into my real life.

 

 

What I want to do BETTER next month:

1. My goal for months now has been to get ALL of my ebooks onto paperback via Createspace.  I want to do this.  It is just time consuming.
2. My other goal is to write two more books that are already in the works (one with a friend and one on my own)!    I plan on having both completed by May (ahh!!)

3. Utilize YouTube.  I have a few videos (one that has 110,000 views, but that is my highest-viewed video).  I think making more videos has been on my list forever, but I finally have everything that I need to create a studio, so I am just going to go for it now!  I have a huge list of videos that I want to make (I was telling my friend Rachel that I have this list on the back of a magazine... which brings me to #4…)
4. Get more organized.  My friends Paula and Jamie have been telling me to do spreadsheets forever and I still have not done ANY (not for Facebook or anything!)   This will make my life so much easier and thankfully, my husband is willing to take on this role for me.
5. Apply to speak at a few more conferences.   I really just want to SHARE what I know to help other bloggers!   This has been our goal since the beginning.

 My page views this month were at 2.9 million (I owe a lot of it to my “Mommy, will you lay with me” post that went viral.)  It went up just a touch from last month.

Facebook: 25,215  (I have never kept track of FB or Pinterest, so I can’t really compare it to anything for you… this is my way of keeping track)

Background:  

I was an elementary school teacher, before I became a stay-at-home-mom and one-day-a-week play therapist.   My yearly income was $27,000 (we live in one of the lowest-paying states for teachers).   I worked from 7:30-4:00 every day.   I quit nine years ago to have children.  This month, with my blog, Yourmodernfamily.com, I reached that amount, in one month.   I was thrilled and shocked (as I am every month!)  I started this blog in January 2013.  (Really Dec 2012, but I moved it to WordPress & started “over” in Jan. 2013)

If you are trying to make money on your blog, I hope that you will learn a lot from reading this post and walk about with inspiration and tips to put into practice on your blog.  I owe my success to a lot of effort right from the very beginning.  I hit the ground RUNNING (and stay up late, watching hours of youtube.com videos on how to set up a blog… while our kids were snug in their beds!)

FOUR THINGS THAT HAVE WORKED WELL IN JANUARY:

1-  Working on my overall Images.   I have been using dollar photo club for a lot of pictures.  ($1 per photo) and it has been such a huge booster for my blog.  I have taken old posts (like my Mommy, will you lay with me and my How to make a child feel important) and I gave them new life by updating the images.  Both have done extremely well since their “makeovers”)

2. I added a pop-up newsletter box.

3. I am sending out my weekly Newsletter!   I am really excited about this!   It was such a hurdle to do, because I was nervous, but now I’m just excited. 🙂  People even respond to them telling me that they liked them, etc…  It just makes my day!

4.  Pinterest- I have gone back to the “good ol’ days”
I felt so overwhelmed by my pinning, fb sharing, tweeting, using G+, etc… so I decided to just go back to pinning like the good ol’ days.   I pin for fun.  If I see something pinned that I like, I re-pin it.  Easy enough!   I do share my post of the day and maybe a few others, but I don’t overly-pin my own posts.  I pin what I think looks good.  I have seen that my followers are really liking that!   They are pinning more & I’m getting more followers.

 

FOUR THINGS THAT I WANT TO DO BETTER NEXT MONTH:

1. Put all of my ebooks on Createspace so readers can buy them as paper-backs.  It doubled my income on Potty Train in a Weekend, so I want to do this again.

2.  Still working on bettering my brand new newsletter.  

3. Trying to keep up the traffic from January.  (I worry about this EVERY month)

4. YOUTUBE!  I am going on a tour of the You Tube Lab this week and I can’t wait to put into action everything that I learn!   Paula and I are thinking of doing a weekly g+ hangout with each other or a ‘expert’ in an area and we want to put it on our blog for our readers.

 

TWO PLUGINS I WOULD BE LOST WITHOUT…

1. My WordPress Editorial Calendar.  I love seeing my posts on a calendar!

2. SumoMe.  This is the one that I mentioned earlier- I really love it.  I only wish that I would have done this a year ago or when my Husband vs Wife going to bed post went viral.

Pageviews:  My page views this month were at 2.9 million (I owe it to a lot of Christmas posts that went viral, like my “25 reasons why my Elf on the Shelf forgot to move” post…).  I am not expecting it to stay that way in January, but I’ll enjoy it for now!

Background:  I was an elementary school teacher, before I became a stay-at-home-mom and one-day-a-week play therapist. I worked from 7:30-4:00 every day. I quit nine years ago to have children.  This month, with my blog, Yourmodernfamily.com, I reached that amount, in one month. I was thrilled and shocked (as I am every month!)

When I started blogging, I had no idea that I would be able to earn this sort of income in the amount of time that I have been blogging- two years this month.

If you are trying to make money on your blog, I hope that you will learn a lot from reading this post and walk about with inspiration and tips to put into practice on your blog.  I owe my success to a lot of effort right from the very beginning.  I hit the ground RUNNING (and stay up late, watching hours of youtube.com videos on how to set up a blog… while our kids were snug in their beds!)

Before I begin- here are two things that you need to know.

1- WE DO NOT SPEND THIS MONEY (we have four kids and this money is in a separate account, at a separate bank and we will use it to pay off our mortgage and to pay for our children to go to college).

2- This income does NOT include Becky & Paula OR Essential Oils.
 Our Blogging On The Side book about how to have a successful blog, is doing amazingly well (yay!!), but we are not adding that to our income. I am also not including my Young Living Essential Oils just yet, even though I was very surprised and excited with the income that was earned in the first month (November).

FOUR THINGS THAT HAVE WORKED WELL IN DECEMBER:

1-  Working on my Facebook Images.   I was always a Pinterest-image-only girl, but I have started to focus on my Facebook image.   A perfect square, not too fancy or detailed, very clear and to the point.   This is not the one for the Facebook link, but just the one that I share on my page (I share a link and then add my own square image to the link on Facebook).  I have been using dollar photo club for a lot of pictures.  ($1 per photo)

2.  I am updating my posts to include more related posts. “if you liked this post, I think you will like this one, as well” at the bottom of my posts.    I then include a linked image to another post.  I am keeping them in my blog by taking them from post to post to post.

3. I {finally} started my Newsletter!   Every Sunday at 5:00 am it goes out to my readers.  It is short, sweet and to the point.

4.  My new blog layout.  It is easier for the readers to see what is going on.  I really love it!

 

FOUR THINGS THAT I WANT TO DO BETTER NEXT MONTH:

1. Add a call to action button below each post.  I want to include a link to my newsletter at the bottom of each post.

2.  Work on bettering my brand new newsletter.   How do I want to write it?  What do I want the title to show?   Should I send it more often?

3. Trying to keep up the traffic from December.  December was a great month for traffic because of Christmas, but I am worried about how well January and February will go.

4. Promoting my FREED FROM CLUTTER book that has taken me over a year.  It is a combination of many posts and some added features and I just want to finish it already!  It was literally in the last hours before being released for months, so I can’t wait to just put it out there for the world to read!   I have it on my blog, but I haven’t set up my landing page, etc… yet.  This is on my to-do list!  (ps- affiliates will make 50% of $9.99, just like my other books!)

 

TWO PLUGINS I WOULD BE LOST WITHOUT…

2. Ultimate Nofollow.  This plugin has made sponsored posts SO much easier because I don’t need to know the code for NoFollow, I just check the little Nofollow box!  Easy!

Blogging time:  almost 2 years.

Hi!  I share my income each month, so that you can see how it is possible to earn a living with your blog.  This is only for yourmodernfamily.com  and not for bloggingontheside.com.

I simply share it here for three reasons:

1- My personal family and friends aren’t interested in blogging, so I don’t share my blog with many people in my ‘real’ life.

2- I don’t want to sound “braggy” to anyone, so it is better to keep my personal life personal, (again- my personal friends don’t even know that this blogging website exists).   I hate to hurt people’s feelings and some of my friends have to work a little harder to make ends meet (My husband and I were in that situation not too long ago.  Having a family of six on a single salary is tight.  This blog pays for things that were ‘luxuries’, like sports & preschool- the rest gets saved) 

3- I want to inspire other bloggers to know that they can do this, too, so this is how I am able to do that, because only bloggers are reading this page and you guys know what to do with this info and how to use it. 🙂

So, about this report:
This is what I am owed (pending payments)… so this is what I have done and I am waiting for them to pay me for these things.

Example:  I wrote a sponsored post for $950, but they will not pay me for several months (usually about three months).   There are times when a company will close or when they will forget to pay me for my work.
I now have my husband (a finance major) helping me to keep track of this, because I have not been good about this in the past and I know that companies have gotten away with not paying me.   He started managing my income this month to help me out and its been great.

Also, remember that this income does not include my OUTGOING money.  I pay for things like newsletter services, memberships to blog-related things, editors, new camera lenses, products for posts (example- ornaments to make the TMNT ornaments), affiliates for my books, meeting expenses, accountant advice, signing up for Young Living (b/c I see huge potential there!),  website design costs ($300), website hosting ($150 a month, but up to $300 a month), etc…    This accounts for a lot of my earnings, but you have to spend money to make money

November will always be a high-earning month, before Christmas.  December will be just as big.   a great one, and you will find that November and December are usually ‘big’ months, but January and February will slow down.

Also- please note that We DO NOT SPEND THIS MONEY.  This money is being saved, to be used to pay off our house.  My payments are directly deposited into an account that is separate from our family account (in another bank).   I don’t even have checks or a debit card for that account.  In order to take money out, I have to physically go in, with my drivers license and ask for a certified check.   I try to make it as hard as possible to get this money out, to try to deter us from wanting to use it.
Once our house is paid off, we will start saving it to go towards our four children’s college educations.     I don’t think that that we will be “spending it” for a very long time (four kids X $30,000 a year for college = around $500,000 and that is without inflation!)

The exceptions:
1- Donations (church and charities)
2- Preschool payment and the kid’s field trips, etc… (anything school related)
3- To pay for my blog-related expenses

I tell you this because I don’t want you to think that I just go out shopping all day or don’t treat this income like the blessing that it is to our family.

What blogging IS NOT… 

Blogging is not a “few hours here or there”
Blogging is not “my hobby”
Blogging is not “easy money”
Blogging is not “a quick buck”

What blogging is…
Blogging is how I contribute to my family
Blogging is a lot of work, at night, when my family is in bed.
Blogging is how I feel that I can help other moms from home.
Blogging is how I can stay home with our kids, but still earn a living.

(I recently moved from using only Google Adsense to letting The Blogger Network take care of all of my ads.  You have to have certain number of Pageviews to work with them, but it has paid off.  We still use Google Adsense for bloggingontheside.com)

QUESTION and ANSWERS….
There have been many questions on our Blogging on the Side Facebook page, so here are my answers:

– I work probably 3-4 a day (every night I work from about 9:00- 1:00 am) I try to hope on throughout the day to check FB messages & emails when I can.

– my initial goal was to pay for preschool

– The first big blogging expense was buying my laptop (macbook pro) and my camera (cannon rebel) – those totaled over $2,000. I spend $150 a month on hosting fees, plus overage costs (this month it went over by $200 b/c of traffic). I have monthly subscriptions to places like Picmonkey, ejunkie, etc… I pay anywhere from $100-$1000 in affiliate fees for my books.   I have spent a lot of money on design things so far, since blogging (over $1,000).  That is my best investment, next to my laptop & camera.

  • Just a few off the top of my head.
    – Do  I log into Tap Influence & Izea daily to find posts?   No, they email me directly with offers. I don’t really go looking for any posts anymore. (unless I feel like its a slow month or something)
    – Do I work in the day?  Not really. So today I just got home from work (I am a play therapist & work a few hours on Wed) but normally my day looks like this:
    7:00 – up with the kids 
    8:10- kids to school. Get our younger kids ready to go. 
    8:40- drop our 4 year old off at preschool 3 days a week. 
    9:30- Workout at Burn Bootcamp (local workout place)
    10:30 – run errands with our two year old. 
    11:40- pick up our preschooler 
    12:00 – lunch w the kids 
    1:00 – quiet time (I am working right now during quiet time) for about 30 min.) 
    Make dinner… 
    3:15- kids home from school
    4:00- homework with kids
    6:00- dinner 
    7:00 -bedtime for the kids.

    – DO I HAVE A VA?   No, I don’t have a Virtual Assistant. I run my blog alone, with the help of my husband on the finances. 

    – Do I message the big bloggers that I mentioned to ask for shares?   No, I just promote & share a post to their Facebook page once in a while, but most of my traffic is organic. I share to other’s FB pages about 1-3 times a week. I find that if I have a share-worthy images and a post that people are looking for, the shares are really organic, meaning the are ‘found’ and shared without me doing much to promote it.–  Why don’t I share my income on my Your Modern Family Page- I don’t want to make my real-life friends & family feel uncomfortable.

So many of you have asked me (on our Facebook Group – join here!) about how to monetize your blog and how much I make.  I haven’t told anyone my income, except a few close friends and family members, until this site.  To be honest, my “non-blogging” friends and family don’t even know that this page exists or that blogging makes any money.  I don’t share it because, well, what why would I share it?   Sharing income isn’t really something that we do, however, I do feel that it is beneficial to you (so I share here and only here).

I started sharing in August of this year and this is just for you and your benefit.  It is hard to open up like this, but it is my hope that you see it as a “I can do this, too” ah-ha moment.

**I make a small income off of this blog (bloggingontheside.com), as well, but not nearly as much because our book is FREE (right here!) and our posts are not sponsored.  So- none of this income includes our BOTS.  The page views are not included, either.

 

NOTE:  I do not spend this money that I make.  We save almost all of it.  We spend the some of the money on things like preschool and sports for the kids, and we donate money to Alzheimer’s  (my grandma died from this terrible disease) and to St. Jude’s, but the rest goes into savings.  My ultimate goal is to pay the house off early and to have my husband working with me on the blog (he is a finance manager).
Also- I am a HUGE money-saver.  I pretend like this money does not exist and I still shop only on clearance, I still live on my husband’s income, I still only send one child to school to save on preschool tuition, etc…  I hope that no matter how much I make, I always keep in mind that money can come and go, so we better save it while we can and use it for things that will benefit others, not ourselves. 

 

OUTGOING EXPENSES:
I also pay expenses.  I pay $99 (moving soon to $150) a month for WordPress Hosting (you can get it cheaper!) and I pay for other things…  I am paying for some things to be done to my blog (adding a newsletter box, etc…), paid my affiliates, paid for an editor of my third book (being released soon).   I bought some accessories for my camera, bought materials to write posts, paid for fees like paypal, pic monkey, mail chimp, etc…

So many of you have asked me (on our Facebook Group that you should join!) about how to monetize your blog and how much I make.  I haven’t told anyone my income, except a few close friends and family members, until last month.  I shared my August income from Your Modern Family.
