Rachel Lister was very kind to share her income report with us today along with some of her best blogging tips. Here’s something to keep in mind as you read blogger income reports.

I started blogging on a whim.

It seemed like something fun to do. I thought there was the potential of getting some free stuff for my kids but I never dreamed it would ever bring in any real income.

Nine years later, my blog is now my family’s main source of income. It helped us get through an extended period of unemployment, visit places we otherwise wouldn’t have been able to, and has really allowed me to create a career I love while keeping me home with my kids.

When I first started blogging, I was struggling to make even $1,000 a month with my blog (If you are thinking about starting a blog, we have a few ideas to get you started).

One of my favorite resources for new bloggers is the book, How to Blog for Profit without Selling your Soul. It does a great job of laying everything out there and it’s very readable.

To make an income blogging, it’s really all about the quality of your content. Quality is way more important than quantity, so the good news is you don’t have to kill yourself trying to post as often as possible.

Focus on creating great quality posts that people want to come back to. I’ve really slowed down my posting schedule in an effort to create more detailed posts so I’m curious to see what kind of results I get from that.

My most popular posts for August, 2016:

Firework Salt Painting (this one is ALWAYS a favorite)

Single Serve Hot Fudge Sauce – This was an older post so I was surprised to see it in the top 5.

Weekly Preschool Lesson Plans – All About Me – another old one but one that is always popular.

Staying in Touch with Kids After School on a Budget

Momsicle A.K.A Breastmilk Popsicle

AUGUST 2016 BLOG INCOME REPORT

Ready to see how where my income came from in August?

Affiliate Income

Amazon Associates – $113

Total Affiliate income: $113

Ad Income:

Monumetric (formerly The Blogger Network) – $1229

Adsense – $545

Total Ad Income: $1774

Sponsored Posts:

Massive Sway – $1045

Clever (formerly Clever Girls Collective) – $1645

Influence Central – $905

Izea – $275

Mom it Forward – $600

Social Fabric – $490

Best Buy – $50

TapInfluence – $550

Makerly – $350

Direct Sponsored Posts – $2350

Total Sponsored Post Income: $8260

VA Work – $575

TOTAL BLOG INCOME FOR AUGUST – $10,722

This is a big jump from last month’s income report. I credit that to the fact that I worked my tail off and I had several larger projects that I finished this month. I didn’t have a lot of free time in August (which is why this income report is going up late, oops) so there are definitely some pros and cons to earning this much in a month.

EXPENSES

Keep in mind, this income does not include my expenses. There are quite a few expenses that come along once you start blogging professionally. Fortunately, I’ve found they stay in line with your income so you don’t have to spend much in the beginning.

My expenses include Hosting fees, VA work, Graphics, Tech support (I HIGHLY recommend Sarah from Blogger’s Help Desk for this) and more.

I stick to expenses that either help me make more money or simplify my life (most often BOTH).

Tailwind – I use Tailwind for Pinterest scheduling and it has made a HUGE difference for me. Just over a year ago, my Pinterest account had under 3,000 followers. It just hadn’t been something I’d focused on. Once I started using Tailwind, I grew my account to almost 30,000 followers!

If you sign up you can get a $15 credit to Tailwind here.

If anyone is interested, I’ll try and itemize my expenses a bit more next month. Until then, on to the next task!

See last month’s income report here.

I knew absolutely nothing about blogging when I first started. I learned as I went and I’m so glad that I made the jump because it has changed my life and allowed me to support my family while being there for my kids.

Blogger Income Report August 2016 (with affiliate links to the things I love right now).

The breakdown into percentages:

SPONSORED POSTS: 45% of my income.

(PS- here is an amazing course on how to make more by reaching out to brands. You can make 3-4 times more by going for brands yourself, without a “middle man” company. (I do both). 🙂

Book & Course Sales: 25% of my income

Affiliate Programs: 10% of income

Ad Income: 15% of income

Three things that I did BETTER this month:

These tips will have affiliate links to things I’m using and loving!
1- I have been working so hard at my newsletter with ConvertKit.
2- I added Leadpages & saw a huge increase in signups for my courses using the Leadboxes.
3- I finished two courses!

Things I need to work on:
1- My Affiliate Sales. I just joined this affiliate course, so I am hoping to learn a lot. I make a lot some months, but other months are just slow.
2- My Store. I am switching to Shopify. I never spend money unless it is to pay off our mortgage or invest it in the kid’s futures (seriously) so this is huge for me. I couldn’t stand people e-mailing me saying that their product isn’t being delivered. This will fix that problem.
3- I have a few other blogs that had taken the backseat, so I found someone to help me get one up & running. Again… trying to spend money to make money.

Things I loved this month:
Waking up earlier & going to bed earlier. I was always up until 2:00 am, but now I am waking up at 5, going to the gym and then using my kid’s school time (9-12 is preschool) to work.

My goal has always been that my kids have me as a mom, not a blogger, so that meant finding a schedule that made that happen. I still work a little when they are home, but not a lot. I do my big things while they are at school and save my little things to do when they are here & I have a few minutes. That eliminates any stress about working when they are home. Yay!

I have also been taking a few courses & reading more books. Now, I don’t have much time, but I do try to make time to learn every single day. The more you learn, the more you know (sounds like a Dr. Suess quote, doesn’t it?) No one can know it all, but we can educate ourselves to know more. That leads me to the next part…

What I am reading & courses I am taking:
Course–>> Affiliate Marketing
Course–>> Sticky Blogging
Course–>> Making More with Brands (make more by reaching out to brands for sponsored posts)
Book–>> Increase Your Pageviews – Blog Traffic Ebook
Book–>> Tasty Food Photography

Time because we know that YOU want to be making money on your blog and you just might not have the time. We are sharing the secrets to doing just that. We love to celebrate your successes with you, whether it be time, posts or income. Today, we are celebrating with Lena, as she shares her latest income report.

Hi guys! Lena
here from WhatMommyDoes.com – I’m super excited to share my first income report on BeckyandPaula.com today.
If you know me, you know I’m a bit of a procrastinator, so I am actually sharing my October 2015 income report in March. I almost didn’t since it was so late but I gained some insights from October that I am still excited about and can’t wait to share with you.
Here we go!

October 2015 Earnings Breakdown

My total earnings for the month were $7,495 and here’s the breakdown:

Advertising income – $3,850

Affiliate income – $1,933

Sponsored content – $1,712

Highlight on Sponsored Posts

I discussed advertising income in a recent income report on my blog, so today I would like to focus on sponsored posts.
My October sponsored posts were with several agencies. My earnings were almost evenly split this month among Influence Central, MomItForward, Tap Influence, and IZEA plus a small social media campaign with CleverGirls. I had the opportunity to write about Depend Silhouette underwear (that one was really fun!), American Express Serve (debit card), Sleep Number, Sprout organic baby food, and even Back to the Future!
People ask me all the time if I like having a blog that’s about more than one topic and my answer is always YES! The mix of sponsored posts I wrote this month is a perfect example of that. I got the AMEX campaign because I have a large catalog of family finance posts and I got the Sprout campaign because my audience is mostly moms of young children.
The Back to the Future campaign wasn’t a 100% perfect fit for my blog, BUT I was able to get that campaign based on my enthusiasm for the topic. I don’t know many people who are bigger fans of the franchice than me, and I think it showed in my application. I learned this month that really pitching yourself when you apply for sponsored posts goes a long way toward you getting selected. For all the posts I was awarded this month (with the exception of Sprout which was offered to me directly through TapInfluence), I made a point to pitch my exact idea for each post and also give examples of related posts I had already written. This way, the campaign manager could know what to expect from me (the social shares I can deliver, the types of images I can create, etc).
My biggest takeaway this month other than the fact that pitches really do matter is that it pays to write about a topic BEFORE you ever get a sponsored post on that topic. If you come across a wonderful opportunity, it pays to show you have enthusiasm for a topic and that you can deliver a nice looking product.

Increase in Page Views & Income Over September 2015

Although I didn’t publish a separate Sept. 2015 income report, I have stats from that month to compare October to. September income was $3,776 and my page views were 230,000. October income was $7,495 with 316,000 page views. Essentially, my page views increased by 37% while my income doubled.
I found this very interesting and see that it was mainly two things:
1) In late September I spent a lot of time on the phone with my Media.net representative working on ad placements, sizes, and formats (cost per click and cost per thousand). We tested lots of different combinations and finally settled upon the mixture you see on my site now. October was the first full month of this particular ad mix, and I saw a nice increase in the $ earned per thousand visitors.
2) Traffic increased disproportionately to my monetized content. Many of my older posts were written with no regard to monetization – they were purely educational or meant to be entertaining. However, a good portion of the posts I wrote in the past year are all related to the various affiliate products I promote. And those are the posts that picked up traction this month, directly affecting how much money I earned.
Seeing these overall trends encouraged me to sit down and think through a more comprehensive affiliate strategy and also work harder toward driving page views.
When I look at my overall earnings per thousand visitors for 2015 up to this point, there is a cleear correlation between blog traffic and income potential. I have consistently earned between $16-$20 per thousand visitors. So more visitors = more income.
Seeing as my income is disproportionately earned from highly monetized posts, I realize I need to go back through my archives and link up my older posts to newer ones with better monetization strategies tied to them. It’s April now and I have had this on my to do list since October – I’m hoping I’ll get to it by this summer!

New Things I Learned in October

1) Sponsored posts are a funny thing. Earlier this year, I was wishing and hoping that I would even get one sponsored post per month at $75. This month I had to turn down some opportunities and not apply for quite a few because I couldn’t feasibly complete them all. I feel like 300,000 monthly page views was some sort of sponsored post sweet spot! I raised my rate this month across the board, and it has slowed down the offers and also ensured the ones that do come through are worth my time.

2) I feel like I got a little bit better at selling without being “salesy.” It’s always been a huge turnoff for me to try to get my readers to sign up for something without feeling like I’m being pushy. This month I found myself going to a more “soft sell” approach where I write a lot about a topic and give the reader the option to take advantage of an affiliate offer or continue to more related content without taking action. This has helped my page views overall and also made me feel better about my monetization efforts.

3) The best thing that happened this month is my blog earnings allowed me to invest in a friend’s business when they needed it most. The money we earn from my blog is extra in our eyes. We tithe on the earnings and then use the rest for non-essential expenses like vacations, home repairs, and investing. It was so nice to be able to help a friend in need and put our money into something we believe in.

What’s Up Next

I remember a day in blogging when no one shared what they were making or how they were doing it. It was so hard to learn how to blog and many of us were doing it for years before we even realized that money could be made blogging!

The tides have turned though and instead of silence about things like income and blogging strategies there is an abundance of information out there. In a way, I LOVE this. It’s allowing many people to create careers that they love and do amazing things with their sites. On the other hand, sometimes it can be wearisome.

If everyone is popping out income reports that boast numbers larger than your own, it can be hard to read sometimes and end up being discouraging. Even worse, sometimes these things foster quiet competitions between bloggers. Where everyone is secretly checking out every one else’s numbers trying to see where they rate by comparison.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not against income reports. I think they can be VERY helpful especially if they are being shared with information about how to grow your site. I LOVE reading them… but I know that it can be a struggle for some which is why I decided to write this post today.

Remember that in blogging, there is no competition. None of us are competing against another and one blogger’s success in no way prevents you from being successful too.

As you read reports I encourage you to think about them in three ways:

You don’t know another person’s life… They may have more time to put into their blogs than you do. Maybe they hire a sitter to help with the kids, perhaps their children are in school full time while you are homeschooling. Maybe she has a husband that is able to help with things around the house while yours works 15 hours a day and the bulk of the household responsibilities naturally fall to you. And it’s possible that the blogger you admire has really taken it too far and is spreading herself too thin (I’ve been there). We are not all on an “even playing field,” so trying to measure up some one else’s numbers against your own is unrealistic and unfair to you!

Numbers aren’t a gauge of “success” – Each of us decide what success means for ourselves. You are in control of your own blogging destiny. If you’ve been blogging for awhile I’m sure you’ve noticed how you can never quite “arrive” in blogging. There was a day when I thought all I wanted in the (blogging) world was to hit 1,000 fans on Facebook. Then I hit it and I had a solid 24 hours of rejoicing before I was pining for 1,500 then 2,000 and higher. Even if you have a million fans, you’ll be doing everything you can to hit 2 million. Measuring in numbers is impossible. Instead, set goals of who you want to help, what types of financial goals you have or even the types of content you want to be putting out. Number driven goals are great too, but they must be balanced with the true heart behind your blog or you will get burnt out faster than you can say viral blog post.

Take it as encouragement – When you see another blogger’s success (even if it’s some one that is bragging), try to take it as an encouragment, see the beautiful and amazing things that can happen through blogging. Recognize that her reaching her goals in no way prohibits you from reaching yours. Don’t get discouraged about goals some one else is reaching that you weren’t even striving for! Keep your eyes on YOUR prize, and YOUR goals, whatever those may be, as you also rejoice with your friends in their successes.

Study their sites to see what they have that you don’t – There is always room to improve. Always! If some one has hit a goal that you haven’t reached yet, take the time to look at their site (or social media accounts) to see what they are doing that you haven’t done yet. Comparison CAN be good if you use it as a tool to help you look at your blog objectively and use it to grow!

You will continue to see income reports shared on our site, because many people have spoken out about how much they help and encourage, but if you are one that has a struggle seeing them on our site or others, I hope you take this as an encouragement. We thing YOU are awesome. We think your goals are awesome and everything that we share here (income reports included) we hope you can use as leverage to reach your blogging goals and surpass them!

How I Made Almost $30,000 on my Blog in 2015

I’ve been asked so many times, “How do you make money with your blog? I didn’t even know that was possible!” But when I set a goal for my blog in 2015, I never in a million years expected to make almost triple that!

Since so many people and other bloggers like to know how I do it, I like to do 1-2 posts a year with a detailed look at what exactly I did to make money. I’ve been told people love how detailed my reports are so I hope this helps YOU too!

Affiliate Income:

My Recipe Magic – This didn’t make me much money, but I worked with them for a few years posting my recipes and getting paid for bringing views to their site. Sadly, they stopped this program early this year and do not pay for views anymore. – $8.90

Ahalogy – Ahalogy is a Pinterest scheduler that use to pay you for the amount of Pinterest views you brought in. This program was discontinued as well a few months ago, but their scheduler is still up and running and is one of my favorite Pinterest schedulers! – $280.01

Amazon Associates – I can make a lot more with Amazon Associates when I put in the time and work into it, but I do love this program because it can be a real passive way to make income. Use the affiliate links in your blog, on social media, or open up an affiliate store and get people to shop there. No matter how you do it there is a lot of potential with this program. – $620.71

Apple/iTunes – Talking about iPhone apps on my blog has been profitable and makes me money several times a year. If you blog a lot about technology or have a lot of posts with app suggestions, this is a great program to become a part of. – $53.99

Total: $963.61

Advertising

Blog Ads – This income comes from ad space sold on my site from various other businesses and bloggers. I love working with these people and love offering space on my blog to help others. –$376.60

Google Adsense – “Google AdSense is a program run by Google that allows bloggers in the Google Network to serve automatic text, image, video, or interactive media advertisements, that are targeted to site content and audience.” A lot of bloggers say they don’t make good money from this, but you really can do well with Google Adsense and I feel like I have the numbers to prove that. – $3,215.51

PadSquad – PadSquad is similar to Google Adsense. The only difference is that it is for mobile optimization and advertising. Pad squad sets up the mobile version of your site for free and then places ads through the mobile version that are targeted toward your content and audience. I LOVE Pad Squad. It’s one of my favorite forms of income and the number here is only a small portion of what I’ve earned so far this year because payments are 60 days behind. – $9,405.35

Total: $12,997.46

My Book

E-book – This includes books that were sold through Amazon Kindle and through Nook from Barnes and Noble. – $307.82

Print Book – The book is printed through CreateSpace.com. – $611.16

Total: $918.98

Sponsored Posts

Mom’s Affiliate – Mom’s Affiliate is a great site that offers all kinds of campaigns for bloggers. I prefer to only do sponsored posts from them and have written two for several companies so far. It seemed to fizzle out early in the year and I have not had any more opportunities since then. – $225.00

Post Joint – This was a new website I found this year. People will write articles and offer to have them published on your site. You can do it for free or send back the offer with the amount of money you want for publishing it. –$85.75

Clever Girls – Clever girls is one of my favorite ways for making some extra money. They are kind of like a contractor where they get opportunities from big businesses, and then I apply to participate. If I am picked for the campaign (sponsored post, social media shares, etc), I earn money. I have been working with them for years and I love how they work! – $130.00

IZEA – I love IZEA because they list out all the opportunities and campaigns and you just scroll through and bid on what you want to participate in. I’ve done a ton of Twitter shares with them, several sponsored posts, and even some Instagram posts. – $947.64

MSB / TapInfluence – MSB stands for Military Spouse Bloggers and I am loving working with MSB New Media this year. If you are a military spouse blogger go ahead and join now! – $1,213.17

SITS Girls / Massive Sway – $575.00

iConnect – I also did one sponsored post with iConnect this year. I think they use to be named something else, but I’ve loved working with them thus far. – $77.39

Total: $3,028.95

Social Media Shares

This is income made from various people and businesses who pay to have their website or products promoted on my social media channels. – $195.46

Virtual Assistance

Fiverr – Fiverr has been a big source of income for me. I am able to offer services on there and work at my own pace on my own time. I have slowed down with Fiverr however, because I wanted to be able to offer these services on my blog. If you’re thinking about joining Fiverr to make money, check out my post: How to Use and Make Money With Fiverr. – $1,365.00

Take it away, JoAnn..

Hello! I’m JoAnn from aWhimsicleLife.com and this is my monthly look behind the scenes of my business. Here’s what worked and what didn’t. This month, I divulge everything about my book launch and reveal how my traffic spiked this month.

The Book

Oh, the book. Let me first say that I’ve spent a year creating this book. However, here’s a secret: I didn’t have high hopes for it. Halfway through creation, and while learning more about being a blogger and serving an audience, I realized that I had a problem. A big problem.

My audience had never EVER professed a need for a book on Christmas family activities. I initially created this book because I saw Christmas activities pinned a lot on Pinterest and thought, “Hey, there are a lot of people interested in this, maybe a book will do well.”

Totally the wrong way to go about creating a product. Even though there may be a lot of people out there interested in Christmas crafts, they are not MY people. They are not the audience I developed and I grew.

But I didn’t want to quit. I tried to compensate by attracting more crafty people into my audience through my launch plan and Facebook Ads.

Launch Email List

I set up an email list specifically for the release of the book. I then filmed a set of four videos. The first video I used to gain more subscribers through Facebook.

Want to make the holidays magical and meaningful for your family? I have a way to do that!http://www.awhimsiclelife.com/2015/10/make-christmas-magical-and-meaningful-for-kids.html

I boosted this post for the month of October at a budget of $5 per day. I promised three free videos: Elf on the Shelf ideas, an alternate Black Friday Tradition, and Ways to Encourage Giving in Kids when people signed up for the list. I gained about 50 new subscribers – which to my current list of 400 made a nice difference.

I started sending these videos to my subscribers on November 1st and sent one every few days leading up to the release date on November 8th. In each video, I gently teased the book’s release.

Sales results

On release day, I offered the book for the reduced price of $3.99 (regularly prices $4.99) for two days only. I knew that offering an incentive with a definitive end date increases sales during that time period.

Two people bought the book. I know them both personally.

Face palm.

I tried to reduce the price of the book again during Black Friday. I dropped it down to $1.99. ONE more person bought the book. I didn’t know her!! Woo hoo! I was rising up in the world.

About a week into December, I changed my game plan. No one was purchasing the book. Bear in mind, I had approximately 10 people review the book on their sites and had 20 affiliates also signed up to market the book. Nothing. No one wanted the book.

I pulled the PDF version from my site, discontinued all my Facebook advertisements, ceased my affiliate program and turned to Amazon. I thought, if I don’t have the audience for the book, Amazon has it. Now I just needed to reach it.

Although I had a Kindle version available, I never marketed it because I wanted my affiliates to get as much commission as possible. Now with no affiliates, I signed onto Kindle Select. Kindle Select made my book available in the Kindle Lending Library and to Kindle Unlimited. It also let me run a free book promotion.

On December 4th, my birthday, I advertised a special birthday promotion of Christmas with Kids. My readers and others could download the book free for 5 days only. Coincidentally, my guest post on Living Well Spending Less ran on the same day (Happy Birthday to me!). If you check my author bio at the bottom of that post, I mention the book with a direct link to the book site. When LWSL readers clicked that link, they found this at the top of the page:

During that weekend, readers downloaded 1,313 copies of Christmas with Kids. My takeaway: people wanted the book, they just didn’t want to pay for it.

I have to find humor in the little things.

What I learned

The next book I create will be based on a professed need of my audience or a question that I’m asked over and over. The good news is that I have two such products in the works.

Traffic Spike

First, my analytics.

In the middle of the month, my traffic spiked. And then went up again and again. This happened because of one post: Cranberry Vanilla Autumn Punch – a sponsored post.

Sponsored posts are good for income as well as traffic for one awesome reason. This post came from Social Fabric. I initially applied for it on a whim because it also included a recipe contest that I thought might get me some exposure if I was one of the bloggers included in the project.

I wasn’t chosen. However, the promise of a recipe contest pushed me to improve my food photography. I used some photography tips from an online course I’m taking and produced my best food pictures to date.

That day, I received the email every Social Fabric member relishes. “Congratulations! We’ve decided to pick up your post for a Facebook ad!”

Now, no one knows how much SoFab spends on their ads, but due to my previous Facebook ad experience of a $5 a day budget, I know that it’s A LOT more than that. On my highest day, that post brought in over 3,000 page views. As an added bonus, this same post continued to spike throughout the month.

The Numbers

Income

BlogHer Advertising: $93.80

Sponsored posts: $340

Stitch Fix affiliate: $25

Google Adsense: $79.41

Amazon affiliate: $29.97

Book sales: $8.97

Total Income: $576.45

Expenses

Facebook ad: $16.02

Build Your Blog Conference: $149.00

E-Junkie: $5.00

Dollar Photo Club: $10.00

Website Redesign 50% Final Payment: $200

Hosting 1-year Renewal: 231.97

Blogger Breakfast: $14.22

Boardbooster: $15.00

Business Visa Activity charge: $2.00

Total Expenses: $643.21

Total Profit: $-66.75

I invested in a website design which I am over the moon about! I paid my final 50% this month. As part of the redesign, Laura, my designer, also optimized by Google Adsense. Previously, my site had one Google ad that brought in less that $12 a month. You can see how that number has improved.

Let’s talk about that negative profit. Some months are like that. A blog is a business that costs money to run. Most businesses take 3 to 4 years to become profitable. I’m approaching my 2-year mark, so I am happy with number.

Ok… Time to get started!!!

Hello! I’m JoAnn and I’ve been blogging for two years over at A Whimsicle Life. I help moms raise kids while keeping their sanity – what may seem as an impossible task. I’ve been sharing my income reports since March on my site and I am super excited to share October’s report here! Here is my monthly rundown of what went well, what tanked and what I’m working on in the future. This report focuses on prepping a product for launch and how I maintained my blog during that time.

Prepping a Product

Last December, I coordinated a project involving over 70 bloggers called Countdown to Christmas. Because of the large number of participants, I split the group into three. Starting December 1st and leading up to Christmas, three bloggers shared their own Christmas related craft, activity or recipe. I chose my favorites from that project and compiled them into a book called “Christmas with Kids” – with permission of course.

Since I had never created a product before, nonetheless a book, I felt that a collaborative book would be a great place to start. I thought, most of the material is already written, all I have to do it put together and make it pretty. Easy, right?

No. No, it’s not easy. This book has consumed my life since June. Between learning the in’s and outs of publishing software (I compiled the book in Scrivener and formatted in Word), developing a marketing plan and then coordinating between twelve other people without stepping on toes – easy does not at all describe it.

But, I had fun and if nothing else, this has been a huge learning experience. Here are my three takeaways:

It’s Hard to Promote a Christmas Product in October

I started promoting my launch email list on October 1st by purchasing an ad on Facebook. I set my budget at $5 a day and let it roll. By the end of October, my launch email list had 50 subscribers. That number disappointed me.

Word is not the best for formatting

While I enjoyed working in Scrivener because I could easily move whole chapters and re-organize sections with ease, I grew incredibly impatient with Word. Christmas with Kids contains a lot of pictures. Many of the chapters contain step-by-step tutorials where I wanted pictures in a specific place on the page. I created a few Word hacks to work around some spacing difficulties, but overall I wanted a lot more control over my layout. For my next book, I plan to learn InDesign.

Talking to a Lawyer is Invaluable

Throughout my creation process, I often wondered if I was protected – particularly since I used so many other people’s work. Of course I had permission through email, but never any contract. Luckily, I attended a conference in September and got the opportunity to talk to a lawyer familiar with bloggers: the wonderful Sara F. Hawkins.

She suggested I draw up a simple contract detailing what I’m using from each blogger, how they will get paid and that the copyright of the book will be in my name.Copyright?!? What? I need to copyright the book?

Yes. And it was an incredibly simple process. I logged onto the Library of Congress website, uploaded my book and paid the $55 fee. Done! The copyright is in my name because if any legal dispute arises, I won’t need 13 different people to sign off on paperwork. I would represent the work as a whole.

Keeping the Blog Going

I noticed a dip in social shares this month since I didn’t spend much time on social media during the month of October. While I still tried to publish 2-3 posts per week, the volume of shares was less. My most popular new posts this month were:

How to Tell if Your Child is Getting Bullied – 122 shares

I wrote this post for one of my friends who was worried about her son. He didn’t talk about friends at school or playing with people at recess and she wondered if other kids were bullying him. I researched this for several days and compiled my findings in this post along with a personal story of my own bullying.

When I posted this on my Facebook page, a lot of people shared their own bullying stories in the comments. I loved the response. Although writing this post was extremely emotional for me, I saw how sharing my heartache could inspire community and help others feel less alone.

Trick or Treat Glitter Pumpkin Stack (Sponsored) – 96 shares

I needed a way to display Hershey’s candy in a fun way. I thought of how we always lack someone at home on Halloween to pass out candy and pitched this pumpkin stack to Social Fabric.

Talk Like a Pirate Treasure Hunt – 120 shares

Arizona has a wonderful community of bloggers! One amazing blogger started a group called Blockbuster bloggers where we all brainstorm a recipe, craft or activity that relates to a movie coming out. We then all publish our posts on that’s movies release date and promote each other like crazy. This post was for the movie Pan.

5 items you can Toss Out of Your Closet Right Now – 57 shares

I have a popular post called How to Create a Small Wardrobe that I’m always looking to spin off. Elaborating on a popular topic is difficult. I always have trouble thinking of an idea that is similar to the topic yet different. My husband actually suggested this post topic to me and I ran with it.

The Stats

Total: 326.34

Total Profit: $1506.47

My profit is huge this month in part to two three-post sponsored series getting paid. Oh happy day! Also, my affiliate income is larger than normal due to an awesome flash sale of Elite Blog Academy (of which I’m an affiliate). Usually my blog profit falls within the $10-$20 range.

Page Views

Total page views for October: 23,o82,

Oh, it’s always heartbreaking to see page views go down. I live in Phoenix, AZ. Every school break, I publish a list of places to take kids in Phoenix. I link it to posts I’ve already written in my blog and the post always blows up. It’s spectacular. The peak at the beginning of October was from my fall break post. As you can see, the page views go down as soon as fall break ends.

Sad? Yes. I’m still struggling with ways to raise page views. Although I experience brief successes, I would love to have my views be more consistent. I am still learning.

That is my rundown for October. Next month, I’ll let you know how the book launch went and how many copies of the book I’ve sold.

My income this month, as with every month, is calculated BEFORE expenses (expenses are several thousands of dollars!) This is also my PENDING income (what I am owed for work done in July).

Before I forget… you can join us on our private Facebook Group for this website here. We talk about tips, ideas, etc… with almost 6,000 bloggers

How many hours do I work a day?

I would say that some days I work four hours on YMF, but other days I don’t work at all. It really is a toss-up. I try to work from 8:00 pm- 1:00 am (while the kids are sleeping, taking 1-2 hours off to watch TV with Mickey).
This is our job – we blog to earn a living.

I try not to work on anything “important” during the day (sponsored posts or even regular posts) because the kids will probably be around and I don’t want to be distracted when they are talking to me.

PV: My Page views were lower this month (about a million less than they were a few months back), but you can see that my income went up, again. This to say that it doesn’t matter (too much) what your PVs are… it is what you are doing with your blog that really makes a difference – are you adding affiliate links into your posts? Are you making products? Are you using your social media to sell? You can do these things & increase your earnings.
Page views this month: 2 million

Monthly Earning RECAP:

First month- blogging- I made about $5 and a free pizza!
A few years later… I was earning enough that my husband was able to quit his job and we both work from home, growing our online business.

WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

What I want to do BETTER next month:

My goal for months now has been to get ALL of my ebooks onto paperback via Createspace – STILL WORKING ON THIS! I want to do this. It is just time consuming.

I am working on a project with a few bloggers where we will give 100% of the proceeds to charity – it is called THE MOM QUILT. We are getting ready to publish it!

Working on an E-Course.

Start making more YouTube Videos. Mickey made a few and figured out the editing, etc… so now we just need to do more. I am still working on this one.
We are going to do this… REALLY!

Organize my Pinterest page more

Turn BeckyMansfield.com into a real thing & not just a page that redirects to YMF (like it has been doing for 3 years now)

~~~ Exciting things on the rise~~~
I will be speaking at another conference in September.   I was also invited to three blogging conferences as a VIP member, which is exciting.  I haven’t quite decided which ones we are going to go to just yet, but we are weighing each option (we don’t want to be gone from the kids very much).
I have a VERY exciting commercial shoot with an amazing celebrity coming up, too, but more details on that as they unfold in the media!
I am going to finally be turning my BeckyMansfield.com into a real page and not just one that redirects to YourModernFamily (as it has done for the past 3 years! haha!)  Mickey and I want to start sharing our daily life happenings over there (along with videos, etc…)
For now- you can keep up with us on INSTAGRAM.  I am YourModernFamily and he is YourModernDad
We share our income reports here as inspiration for you.  Many bloggers, like myself when I started, thought that a lofty goal like $1,000 was out of reach, so we want to show you just how much you can make.  The sky is the limit…
This is BEFORE expenses (expenses are several thousands of dollars!)  This is also my PENDING income, not what I have received this month.   Also, this is only from  YourModernFamily.com, not including income from this website (not including our book sales from Blogging On The Side: Where passion meets profit.)
It is also not including the income from my husband’s blog, Your Modern Dad (although I should have him post one… hmm… he made over $1500 by his second month!  He is literally just following the advice given on our 30 days series and on our blog)   I also have two other friends that have also started blogging (keepinglifesane.com and thecolemines.com, following this advice and they are both doing amazing, as well!  I plan on using those three blogs for case studies on how our advice works… but more on that later.)
Before I forget…  you can join us on our private Facebook Group for Blogging on the Side.  We talk about tips, ideas, etc… with about 3,000 bloggers.
How many hours do I work a day?
At least three- four on YMF.  Another hour is spent on this site.
This is our job – we blog to earn a living.
I try to work from 8:00 until midnight or 1… or 2 am.  My husband and I work together.   Now, about 3 nights a week, we quit early (around 9:00) to watch a movie or play a game – on those nights, I will sometimes wake up early and work for an hour before the kids wake up or work during rest time.  I will do some social media during the day, but that’s about it.   That way I can put my phone down whenever I need to, because it doesn’t “have to get done right now” and I leave the “uninterrupted times” for when the kids are in bed.
PV: My Page views were much lower this month (about a million less than the past couple of months), but you can see that my income went way up.   This to say that it doesn’t matter (too much) what your PVs are… it is what you are doing with your blog.
BIG NEWS THIS MONTH:
BLOGGER2BUSINESS continues to grow!  The plans that we have for this site are amazing!  I can’t wait for you to see more.  We are planning some huge things that will help you to grow your blog, grow your following, increase your page views and increase your income.
New things that I did this month:
1- Started selling a second product.
2-Sharing my posts to some Facebook pages
3- Put specific ads on my page.
4- Wrote a new book with Paula & Holly.
5- I took an Instagram class to help me with my Instagram page.  The biggest thing that I learned is to be CONSISTENT.  Do you post bright images?  Make them all bright.  etc…
6- Wrote another book with Paula, Holly, Jamie Harrington & Rachel Norman.
My e-books and paperback books: over  (I offer my affiliates 50% of the sale and they get the book for free, to preview before selling)
My books: POTTY TRAIN IN A WEEKEND  and You can be a Stay at Home Mom on One Income and FREED from Clutter and a new printable of my Wall-Bed instructions.
Adthive ads (I recently switched from The Blogger Network to Adthrive.   It was a rough two weeks waiting for the ads to take over, work correctly, show up on mobile (80% of my readers are on mobile) and increase the rate, but now it is working well)
What I want to do BETTER next month:
1. My goal for months now has been to get ALL of my ebooks onto paperback via Createspace – STILL WORKING ON THIS!  I want to do this.  It is just time consuming.
2. I am working on a project with a few bloggers where we will give 100% of the proceeds to charity.   I want to get this started this month.
3. Finish my book with two blogging friends, where we will donate many, many books.
4. Start making more YouTube Videos.   Mickey made a few and figured out the editing, etc… so now we just need to do more.
5. Organize my Facebook page to work for me.  I need to set up a schedule.  Example:
7:00 am- affiliate link amazon.
8:00 am- share from my wall.
9:00 am – share one of my own posts.
etc…
Other expenses:
Media Kit (I’m having it done)
Picmonkey, ejunkie, etc…
Equipment (desks, office supplies)
Hosting Fees
Programs for our computers.
Dinner/lunch blog meetings.
Project materials
Young Living Oils
Rodan + Fields products
Trip to Orlando Studios (the actual park tickets & the nights at the hotel was compensated by them, but we still have expenses from the drive & the remainder of our trip)
My NEW finance goals:
1- Pay off the mortgage.
2- Put enough into retirement accounts to be covered when we retire (we’ve started to do this – yay!)
3- Build up the kid’s college savings account (four kids!)
4- Give more money to charities (my two upcoming projects will be helping me with this goal)
My dream goal that I don’t know if I’ll ever actually have:
Buy a small beach house on the ocean at Hilton Head Island – more to remember my grandparents and the memories that HHI holds (they lived there for over 20 years and we always vacationed at their home) than for the actual beach and ocean (because… ‘wait for it’…
I don’t go in the ocean AT ALL.
Fish in the water + Becky in the water at the same time = never going to happen.)
I know they are fun and every one wants to read them…but honestly? I forget to do it. Every. Single. Time. Ack!
Becky shared hers today and I think we can all agree it is ridiculously inspiring!!! The things she is doing on YMF are outstanding. If you look at that and wonder how much of that is attainable for you to do when you aren’t able to put as much time into as she does…we bring you the BTI income report.
While I am a full-time blogger, I spend minimal hours on my  personal site (Beauty Through Imperfection). I work a lot of hours for Holly and the team at Kids Activities blog. I work here, I have a fourth small site that my sister and law and I are experimenting with, and (because I am a little bit crazy) another shared site that will be launching soon.
I don’t like to sit still, and the way I divide my work up reflects that. Hah!
I hope this income report is encouraging for those of you who don’t have as much time to offer your site. Maybe you work another job, homeschool your kids or have other things tying up your time. You can still do a LOT with part time hours, if you put your time in to the right places!
Realistically, you probably won’t see results like Becky’s unless you are putting in a lot of time. It takes so much work and effort to be a blogger (we all know how true that is), but just because your site is smaller or you have fewer available hours, does not mean you can’t create and reach your own dreams and goals with what you have!
This report is only what comes in on my BTI site. I put about 6-10 hours each week into this site.
PVs for May 2015 – 368,200
Income – $4,236
Sponsored posts – $1,655 (Clever girls, Izea, cooperatize, acorn influence, moms central)
Sponsored social – $195
Affiliate – $303
Ads – $1,636 (adthrive)
Ebook sales – $316
Print book sales – $131
Extra:
A few products – soaps, toys for the kids, snacks…
A $150 amazon gift card – I usually don’t do the posts for gift cards, but my husband has had his eye on a expensive coffee grinder for the fancy coffee that he likes to make, so I took a couple small jobs to surprise him with that…the joys of blogging! I love that I can do little things like that!!!
Expense payouts for my VAs, hosting, images, and so forth was around $400 for the month. It’s a large chunk of change, but honestly paying the VAs is one of my favorite parts. It kinda thrills me to be able to help other people reach their goals and dreams in a small way through my little site.
I hope this is encouraging to you! If you are ever wondering how our tips on the blog and in our books would translate out if people were putting in fewer hours, I hope this encourages you that you can still make a good amount of money on your blog, once you’ve built up your following! The important thing is to work hard…in the right directions so you are making the most of the time that you do have to invest into your site.
Becky, Holly and I took the time to make these books and this site, because we REALLY want to see you reach your dreams and your financial goals. Blogging is amazing, even though we each do it in different ways and for different reasons, but we all come together and share this awesome job that we LOVE.
