Are you wondering: Should I use my kid’s pictures on my blog? Well, if you want to share your kiddo’s photos in your blog posts, there are a lot of ways to safely do this. I know that a lot of times we have a great post to share and it can only be told through pictures, but many of us worry about the safety of using their pictures.
I am going to share a few tips that will help you to be extra-cautious when sharing your kiddo’s wonderful pictures on your blog, for your readers. I hope that this helps you and I would LOVE your tips, as well. Leave them in the comments section below.
1- Put a disclaimer on your blog that states that no one is permitted to use their photos without your permission.
2- Edit your photo and add a very faded word or words over their bodies/faces. I first saw this on Paula’s blog & loved the idea! Here is an example with my son. This makes it hard to just “crop out” my blog name at the bottom (although I still include one there). They would have to crop out most of his face to avoid seeing the name there. Now no one can use his picture on their blog unless they don’t mind the words on his face.
3- Don’t share their names if you don’t want to give out too much info. You can give them “fake” names. I know some blogging friends that let their kid’s pick out their “blog names”.
4- Blur their faces easily with one of the editing pages
5- Don’t include faces at all, if you are worried about it. You can post pictures with just part of their faces in them or just their hands or feet or the back of them.
If it worries you, even a bit, just don’t use them. You can get your point across with other images.
Leave your ideas below- we are all learning from each other!
Great post and perfect timing for me given that I’m due right around the corner with my first little one. I want to share pictures and such of little one on my blog and vlog about him or her as well, but I want to do it safely. I’ll definitely be keeping these tips in mind!
Oh – congratulations!!!
These are great tips, Becky. Thank you!
I really should start adding the watermark to my pics. This information is really important, and we should all take time to think about the photos we are sharing online.
Thanks, Linda! 🙂
Great tips. I actually never include photos of my daughters face. I use picmonkey and either pixellate (sp?) or I add an overlay on top, like a heart.
I also found a way to code it so that if you right click and try to save it will not work. I am not sure where I found it, but I am sure googling it will bring it up. Although, someone could still take a screen shot.
And don’t forget to make them unpinnable on Pinterest.
Great tips! Thanks for sharing these wonderful tips.
Thank you for sharing this. One strategy I use is to take photos that are not identifying. So, I’ll take photos of my daughter with her back turned toward me, or her head looking downward. This is actually something I learned during my teacher training, to document student progress while honoring confidentiality when sharing student work professionally. 🙂
Thanks for writing this. As this blogging world grows, this is one of the major concerns of us moms. I do use my daughter’s real name (This post is making me reconsider that), but never show her face in the pictures(I have become pretty creative as to include her in shots without having her full face showing over time as i’m been doing this for 3 years). Even though this is a challenge, it seems to work fine for me and for right now it is good for my peace of mind.
Great ideas- thanks for commenting, Nataliya. It is always a hard choice, thats for sure!
